Having a toilet that continually runs or leaks can be very annoying. However, a lot of people are under the impression that they need to call a professional plumber for any kind of repair work. But in fact, fixing certain issues with your toilet can be a simple DIY project. Twin home improvement experts who run a TikTok channel called Twin Home Experts recently shared a video showing how to fix a leaking toilet without calling a plumber.
Their video has been viewed more than 700,000 times and it walks you through four easy fixes to your toilet that can save you hundreds of dollars on your water bill.
The first thing that needs to be done is identify the issue. Then, it’s important to have all of the right tools and parts ready. This includes a plunger, plumber’s wrench, screwdriver, and any replacement parts you might need (such as a flapper or fill valve).
If the water doesn’t stop running, it may be that your overflow tube is clogged. The solution is to flush the toilet, open the shutoff valve and sponge the remaining water out of the tank. If the float arm is bending down and causing the tank to refill too often, it’s possible that you can adjust the float by gently lifting it. This will put more pressure on the float and stop the overflow.
A faulty flapper is another common cause of a constantly running toilet. If you can’t hear the water escaping through it, you can try pushing down on it with a stick to make sure it seals properly. If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to replace the flapper.
When a toilet is installed, a wax ring is used to seal the gap between the drain and the floor. If it gets damaged, a leak is almost inevitable. The good news is that replacing a wax ring is one of the easiest plumbing jobs you can do.
